Greetings from Greece
Disaster Postcards Set
Blue skies, turquoise sea waters, white houses. This is the image of Greece in the collective imagination, but this description only represents 20% of Greek territory; the famous Greek islands, which are the main driver of the Mediterranean country’s dominant industry—tourism. In fact, 80% of Greece’s land is mountainous, yet this landscape is rarely shown in the media.
According to scientific reports, Greece is one of the hotspots for temperature rise in the Mediterranean, a region that is warming 20% faster than the global average. The Greek landscape is currently undergoing radical changes due to droughts, wildfires, and floods related to climate change, as well as the lack of preventative measures that would minimize the effects of these events.
Inspired by the disaster postcards of the early 20th century—an affordable way to share information where there was no official media coverage—this set of postcards aims to raise awareness about the urgent ecological issues of our time, using Greece as an example. It also seeks to reflect on how the representation of certain places through the lens of tourism and marketing shapes their identity and determines their future.
If you are feeling motivated to take action, send one of these postcards with your thoughts to a friend, or even better, to those who have the power to address the climate crisis. The set provides you with specific addresses.
