Penelope Thomaidi

Penelope Thomaidi is a photographer from Greece, living and working between Athens and Paris.
Member of Hans Lucas since July 2018.

In 2017 she enrolled in “Creative Documentary and Photojournalism” one-year masterclass programme coordinated by Magnum Photos and Spéos International School of Photography in Paris. Her documentary work often focuses on on subjects related to memory – both personal and collective -, self-determination and resistance.

Finalist of La Bourse du Talent 2018 – landscape category.
As winner of the 1st prize of Spéos Awards 2018 – reportage category, part of her last project A Zone to Defend has been screened in Voies Off festival in Arles.

Her work has been presented in exhibitions in Greece, Spain, France and Brazil.

Since 2015, she has been studying photography through seminars and workshops with Antoine D’Agatá, Susan Meiselas, Stuart Franklin, Thomas Dworzak, Myrto Papadopoulos and Maro Kouri amongst others. She dedicates herself to photography full time since 2017.

She has a background in fine arts, holding a Masters degree in Art Production & Research from the Universitat de Barcelona, Spain and a BA in Plastic Arts & Art Sciences Department of the University of Ioannina, Greece. She has also studied in the Fine Arts School of Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2nd circle of pre-graduate studies). Her academic work was a research on the relations between art practices and social action in the era of cultural capitalism.

She has been working as a freelance graphic designer and she is co-founder of WHAT IF Design Studio since 2013.
